Internet Hiatus

Due to an important matter, I’m planning on a week(s) long hiatus from blogging, posting and managing website, media use, and daily checkup on e-mails. Will be online only to do research.

Would you get disappointed if you find out you’ve invested many hours and capital into something you were going accomplish but couldn’t in the end? Who wouldn’t. But the level of one’s disappointment really depends.

California’s University and Its History

Fall has officially has started and I don’t mean the season, although it is technically Fall as of September 21, 2006. High school graduates and fresh MBA are heading back to that wonderful place filled with curious minds and hungry venture capitalists.

The past week, September 12, 2006, the Los Angeles Times included a 36-page section titled, EDUCATION COMMEMORATIVE EDITION, celebrating ‘The path to learning.’ And yesterday’s edition of the Wall Street Journal’s ‘The Journal Report,’ the section concentrated on the Top Business Schools and the Recruiter’s MBA Picks. Both sections were contained a wide range of factual information worth reading.

The ranking of the top MBA universities were managed by Harris Interactive Business School (Year 6 for 2006). The first thing I did before going straight into the articles contained in the Wall Street Report was search for section explaining how the evaluations and ranking were done, because I didn’t want to bother reading inaccurate information. A section that explained how the evaluation were organized explained in good details.

Rather than finishing this blog, you should read the full-length articles yourself.

Entrepreneurship and Tenureship

Have you ever wondered why such exceptional and acclaimed university professor choose tenureship instead of entrepreneurship?

Experts within their field, they’ve accumulated a great deal of knowledge and many, hands-on experience in the field. Many have great analytical skills and business acumen highly desired by business leaders. And often times, business executives privately seek consultations from these university professors to get a different perspective to a business decision.

They are not just good, they are great!

I’ve heard of this one professor in the Finance, Real Estate, and Law Department (FRL) in the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona College of Business. His name is Dr. Michael Carney and he is infamous in the FRL department. I am not a FRL major but I’ve taken a few real estate course at Cal Poly. In the past summer quarter, Real Estate Finance class was being offered and Dr. Carney himself was teaching the course. I logged online and registered immediately, wanting to know what the fuss was about.

Dr. Carney is the Executive Director in the Cal Poly Pomona Real Estate Research Council and a frequent speaker in many of the RERC luncheons and business functions. Dr. Carney knows his material from the back of his head.

To cut to the chase, there are many professors like Dr. Carney who are top-notch experts that chose tenureship instead of entrepreneurship. It was their decision and most likely, they preferred to stay in the ivory tower (kidding) with minimal worries instead of the “You’re on your OWN” road to entreneurship.

John Tesh Radio Show

“Intelligence for your life.”
Finished listening to Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point, a past New York’s #1 bestseller. Since I had a few more miles left to reach home, I changed the deck player to play the FM radio. Changing the saved presets, I landed on the Fish 95.9 station. Something was different.

It was after 9PM and I did not remember a DJ named John Tesh hosting the christian radio station. Rather than the christian songs Fish usually plays around this time, John Tesh was sharing really great information.

The DJ had a smooth and deep vocal tone that spoke with great volume. But more importantly, the topic was not not a sermon or a lecture on the christian lifestyle, it was basic and helpful tips to better our life. The evening topic was about love and relationship, specifically for men. It was meaty information that might come in handy in everyone’s life.

John Tesh frequently toss in his homepage address which is Tesh.com (nice domain). I visited the site that same evening in which I’ve discovered a goldmine. The subject categories on the left column basically covers a broad topic of really good information that can benefit us all. The topics posted on his website lacks citation and reference to the source which is a minus point.

Overall, for certain it was a smart move for the Fish 95.9 radio station (owned by Salem Communications) to replace their evening programs with the John Tesh program. And for your info, John Tesh is not actually speaking at the Fish studio. The Fish 959 is playing Tesh’s recorded podcast.

Mexican Sobe and Tacos

That same day I finished the Hyper Orochon Level 2 in Orochon restaurant, I ate some authentic Mexican sobe and tacos sold on the streets of East Los Angeles [Hispanics, more specifically Mexican-Americans are the major ethnicity group in that city]. This tacos are not the usual Taco Bell tacos with the hard or soft shell. They use sobe tortilla, smaller in size compared to the Guerilla brand tortillas, real meat straight from the butcher instead of the greasy beef.

I’ve watched carefully on how the upbeat cooks prepare each tacos from scratch, because not only was I willing to learn and imitate it myself at home, I was a little health conscious because they were operating their taco stands without a proper handgloves. Just kidding.

As it was near my turn to order the meal, I saw a variety of meats on the frying pan along with unchopped jalepenos and peeled onions. Two types of beef, chicken, pig’s intenstines, pork, sausage, and cow tongue (might have been), spicy carrots, two types of spicy sauce, guacamole, horchatas, the three tables had no space to lay more items.

Since I was a newbie, I ordered the same menu as the previous customer, the carne asada. But I actually wanted to order two carne asada along with one of each meat but the chef misunderstood my finger-pointing selections and forgot a few.

One chef was responsible with the tortillas and the meat, He gets two half-sliced lime and squeeze the juice on the top of the frying pan. Then immediately lays down four tortillas on top of the lime juice to get it soaked as it also get warmed up by the heat. He also cuts different meats and spreads it across the frying board, separating the different meats in its own section. The aroma just increased my mouth-water level. It just made the line waiting that much better and boy was the line long but fast moving.

The second cook asks if you want to eat here or to go. The cook grabs the sobe tortilla with the meat placed laid inside, and again with his bare hands. I understood why gloves were not worn. It would actually be inconvenient and may make more mess wearing the gloves during work. Maybe not. The tacos were then wrapped in foils, placed inside the plastic bag with the sauces, chopped cilantro/onion mix, and a bag of sliced cucumbers.

The third cook collects the money and your drink orders. A dollar for each taco and a cup of the rice drink is a buck too.

The taco stands open up usually Friday to Sunday evening and closes at a different time depending on the customer traffic. These taco stands are only to be found in the County of Los Angeles, LA City because other cities don’t want to give permits for taco stands. And if you’re around Los Angeles and can’t find a taco stand in the streets, try Mexican restaurants. And wherever you go, make sure the building interior [check for the letter grades assigned by the LA Health Department], cooks, cashiers looks appealing and deemed clean, especially your tacos!

After surprising my stomach with a full day of calorie and sodium intensive meals, it was not easy on me the day after. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.
