KYCC Koreatown Youth and Community Center

While searching on google search engine, the search result listed KYCC on the first page. So here I am writing about KYCC (also known as Koreatown Youth & Community Center).

"The Koreatown Youth & Community Center is a non-profit, community-based organization that has been serving the Korean American Community since 1975. KYCC's programs and services are specifically directed towards recently-immigrated, economically-disadvantaged youth and their families who experience coping and adjustment difficulties due to language and cultural barriers." <http://www.kyccla.org/about.html>

I'm so proud of the organization, all the staffs, volunteers, supporters, members, and everyone that is involved with the organization. If only I was out of college, I would make a donation right now.

It was year 1994 when KYCC relocated its main office to 680 South Wilton Place,
Los Angeles. It was few blocks away from my house and the KYCC office was located on the first and second floor of where my friend Sam lived.
I did not know what KYCC was all about until one summer when my mother signed me up with the KYCC summer program. Thank you mom for sending me to the summer retreat.

On the departure date, my mom dropped me off at the site. I held my sleeping bag and bagpack tight so I wouldn't lose it. There were so many Korean kids waiting for the staffs instruction. I don't remember all the nitty gritty details since this was back in my elementary days but I think we were all Koreans. The age range was sixth to eighth grade. All I know is that I was one of the youngins.

Events that I still remember include kids raiding one another with markets during the night, getting my portable bed placed outside by the older kids while I was asleep, and this one 'game.' I don't know what that staff was thinking. Everyone was inside this huge cabin playing some games and/or dancing. The object of the game is, if you agree, you walk over to the one side and if you disagree with what the spokesperson say, you would walk over to the other side of the hall. Everything was swell until one of the staff asks, "is having sex before marriage okay or not okay?" Umm, did I hear this right? Apparently, this was not a Christian retreat. I walked over to the 'disagree' side I knew fornification was bad and evil. Hahaha, grandma taught me well. Then instead of moving on to the next question, some of the staffs started a debate about the topic.

To finally end this entry, I hope the organization continue to reach out to Korean immigrants and their families by becoming a great resource for all occasion!
KYCC offers an extensive list of services that all Koreans residing in Los Angeles can take advantage of. Thank you KYCC.
