| Session 1: Spiritual Leadership Compare and contrast Leadership and Christian Leadership: JOHN GARDNERS: Leadership is the process of persuasion or example by which an individual induces a group to pursue objectives held by a leader or shared by the leader and his or her followers. GEORGE BARNA: A Christian leader is someone who is called by God to lead; leads with and through Christlike character; demonstrates the functional competencies that permit effective leadership to take place. OSWALD SANDERS: Leadership is influence, the ability of one person to influence others. ROBERT CLINTON: The central task of leadership is influencing God's people toward God's purposes. HENRY & RICHARD BLACKABY: Moving people on God's agenda. SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP What is it? How is it different normal leadership? In order to answer these questions, let's define some terms. Spiritual: Leader: Spiritual Leader: While spiritual leadership involves many of the some principles as general leadership, spiritual leadership has certain distinctive qualities that must be understood and practiced if spiritual leaders are to be successful. 1. THE SPIRITUAL LEADER'S TASK IS TO MOVE PEOPLE FROM WHERE THEY ARE TO WHERE GOD WANTS THEM TO BE. THIS IS INFLUENCE. ONCE SPIRITUAL LEADERS UNDERSTAND GOD'S WILL, THEY MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO MOVE THEIR FOLLOWERS FROM FOLLOWING THEIR OWN AGENDAS TO PURSUING GOD'S PURPOSES. PEOPLE WHO FAIL TO MOVE PEOPLE TO GOD'S AGENDA HAVE NOT LED. THEY MAY HAVE EXHORTED, CAJOLED, PLEADED, OR BULLIED. BUT THEY WILL NOT HAVE LED UNTIL THEIR PEOPLE HAVE ADJUSTED THEIR LIVES TO GOD'S WILL. 2. SPIRITUAL LEADERS DEPEND ON THE HOLY SPIRIT. SPIRITUAL LEADERS WORK WITHIN A PARADOX, FOR GOD CALLS THEM TO DO SOMETHING THAT, IN FACT, ONLY GOD CAN DO. ULTIMATELY, SPIRITUAL LEADERS CANNOT PRODUCE SPIRITUAL CHANGE IN PEOPLE; ONLY THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS. YET THE SPIRIT OFTEN USES PEOPLE TO BRING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GROWTH IN OTHERS. 3. SPIRITUAL LEADERS ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO GOD. SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP NECESSITATES AN ACUTE SENSE OF ACCOUNTABILITY. JUST AS A TEACHER HAS NOT TAUGHT UNTIL STUDENTS HAVE LEARNED, LEADERS DON'T BLAME THEIR FOLLOWERS WHEN THEY DON'T DO WHAT THEY SHOULD DO. LEADERS DON'T MAKE EXCUSES. THEY ASSUME THEIR RESPONSIBILITY IS TO MOVE PEOPLE TO DO GOD'S WILL. 4. SPIRITUAL LEADERS CAN INFLUENCE ALL PEOPLE, NOT JUST GOD'S PEOPLE. GOD'S AGENDA APPLIES TO THE MARKETPLACE AS WELL AS THE MEETING PLACE. ALTHOUGH SPIRITUAL LEADERS WILL GENERALLY MOVE GOD'S PEOPLE TO ACHIEVE GOD'S PURPOSES, GOD CAN USE THEM TO EXERT SIGNIFICANT GODLY INFLUENCE UPON UNBELIEVERS. 5. SPIRITUAL LEADERS WORK FOR GOD'S AGENDA. THE GREATEST OBSTACLE TO EFFECTIVE SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP IS PEOPLE PURSUING THEIR OWN AGENDAS RATHER THAN SEEKING GOD'S WILL. TOO OFTEN, PEOPLE ASSUME THAT LONG WITH THE ROLE OF LEADERS COMES THE RESPONSIBILITY OF DETERMINING WHAT SHOULD BE DONE. THEY DEVELOP AGGRESSIVE GOALS. THEY DREAM GRANDIOSE DREAMS. THEY CAST GRAND VISIONS. THEN THEY PRAY AND ASK GOD TO JOIN IN THEIR AGENDA AND BLESS THEIR EFFORTS. THAT'S NOT WHAT SPIRITUAL LEADERS DO. (THEY) SEEK GOD'S WILL, THEN MARSHAL THEIR PEOPLE TO PURSUE GOD'S PLAN. -From Spiritual Leadership By Henry and Richard Blackaby By no means, is there a perfect spiritual leader, these qualities are to be strive after. Remember, the Key to spiritual leadership is our relationship with God. Are we pursuing God? Are we seeking Him and His will for our lives? |

| Session 2: Experiencing GOD When God gets ready to do something, God reveals to a person or His people what He is going to do, because God accomplishes His work through His people. Today, we'll be discussing 7 realities of experiencing God that lead to being used by Him. 1) GOD IS ALWAYS AT WORK AROUND YOU. God is always at work around you. After God created the world, He didn't leave it to function by itself. God has been actively involved throughout history, and He is currently active and involved around you. Consider Jesus, during his stay on Earth, He fulfilled every assignmnent of God, he never failed to do the will of God. How did Jesus do that? Well, Jesus watched what God was doing and joined in with God's work. John 5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his father doing, because whatever the father does the son also does." Whether you know it or not, sense or not, God is actively working around you. What that tells us is that God is working in your life in our ministry, and in the lives of people around us. Example of Moses. Before Moses was called, God was already working in Egypt. The people of Israel were in slavery and they were calling out to God. Exodus 2:24 God heard their groaning and He remembered His convenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. The important factor was not what the will of God was for Moses. The important factory was what the will of God was for Israel. God was at work with Israel, and He was preparing to bring Moses into His activity. 2) GOD PURSUES A CONTINUING LOVE RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU. God created humanity for a love relationship with Him. More than anything else, God wants us to love Him with our total being. He is the one that initiates this love relationship. This love relationship with the Lord is probably the most important aspect of knowing and doing the will of God. If your love relationship is not right, nothing else will be right. How do you love God? 1) John 14:15 "..if you love me, keep my commandments. When you obey Jesus, you show that you love and trust God." 2) You shall have no other Gods in your heart. 3) Walking with God. (Keeping daily appointment with God) When you are not receiving any assignments from God, focus your attention on the love relationship. God maybe simply waiting for you to spend time with Him. 3) GOD INVITES YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED WITH HIM IN HIS WORK. God is the one who is at work, and He alone has the right to take the initiative to begin a work. He does not ask us to dream our dreams for Him and then ask Him to bless our names. He does not ask us to dream our dreams for Him and then ask Him to bless our plans. He is already working. His desire is to get us from where we are to where He is working. When God reveals to you where He is working, that becomes His invitation to join Him. When God reveals His work to you, that is His timing for you to begin to respond to Him. God himself will initiate your involvement in His work. 4) GOD SPEAKS THROUGH THE BIBLE, PRAYER, CIRCUMSTANCES, AND THE CHURCH TO REVEAL HIMSELF, HIS PURPOSES, AND HIS WAYS. The testimony of the bible from Genesis to Revelation is that God speaks to His people. In our day God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit. He uses the bible, prayer, circumstances and the church (other believers). No one of these methods of God's speaking is, by itself, a clear indicator of God's directions. But when God says the same thing through each of these ways you can have confidence to proceed. God is going to be revealing Himself so you can trust Him and have faith in Him. He is going to reveal His purposes so you will be involved in His work rather than some other work. 5) GOD'S INVITATION FOR YOU TO WORK WITH HIM ALWAYS LEADS YOU TO A CRISIS OF BELIEF THAT REQUIRES FAITH AND ACTION. God is wanting to reveal himself to a watching world. He does not call you to get involved just so people can see what you can do. He calls you to an assignment that you cannot do without Him. The assignment will have God sized dimensions. When God asks you to do something that you cannot do, you will face a crisis of belief. You will have to decide what you really believe about God. Can He and will He do what He has said He wants to do through you? What you do in response to His invitation reveals what you believe about God regardless of what you say. 6) YOU MUST MAKE MAJOR ADJUSTMENT IN YOUR LIFE TO JOIN GOD IN WHAT HE IS DOING. This is a major point at which many miss out on experiencing God. To get from where you are to where God is will require major adjustments. These may be: Your Thinking, Circumstances, Relationships, Commitments, Actions, and Beliefs. you cannot stay where you are and go with God at the same time. 7) YOU COME TO KNOW GOD BY EXPERIENCE AS YOU OBEY HIM AND HE ACCOMPLISHES HIS WORK THROUGH YOU. When you do what He tells you, no matter how unsensible it may seem, God accomplishes what He purposes through you. Not only do you experience God's power and presence, but so do those who observe what you are doing. God is at work in reconciling the world to Himself. Because He loves you, He wants to involve you in His work. He begins by pursuing a love relationship with you. Take time to pray through these 7 points and ask the Father to help you understand where and how He is working and how you can be involved in it.
